DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

       The Department of Economics started functioning from the inception of the College as a pre-university course. In June 1966, Madurai Kamaraj University granted further affiliation to B.A. Economics Degree. Over the years, the Department of Economics has grown as one of the largest Departments in the college with 10 faculty members having research proficiency and more than 250 students.

        Department of Economics is the pioneer Post Graduate Department in our institution started in July 1984. By recognizing the academic excellence, the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University granted affiliation to M.Phil. Economics in 2007 and also granted permission for Research Programme (Ph.D.) in Economics in the year 2010. About 100 students have obtained their M.Phil. Degree and 10 scholars have obtained their Ph.D. Degree from the Department so far. The Department aims at the overall development of the students. It not only facilitates the students to achieve academic excellence but also makes the students of different faith to realize and grasp the significance of our culture. Seminars, guest lectures, workshops and extension activities are periodically conducted by the department. Our department hosted “The 35th Annual Conference of Association of Economists of Tamil Nadu on 1st & 2nd November 2014”. Our Department also successfully organized ICSSR sponsored two days national level seminar on MGNREGP- Challenges, Problems and Remedies on 6th & 7th March 2015 and UGC sponsored two days national level seminar on Marine Fish Economy in India on 3rd & 4th July 2015.
