The history of the department dates back to the year 1965 when the subject was introduced at the pre-university level. In 1966, the subject was introduced at U.G. degree level with two members of teaching staff. Tmt. N. Suseela Devi was the first head of the Department who retired in February 1999. After the introduction of science stream, new teachers had been appointed to serve in the Department.
The department has been upgraded as P.G. Department of Mathematics in the year 1985. At present, the Department has 11 sanctioned posts and there are 7 permanent faculty members and 3 faculty members provided by the management.
The Department attains its full-fledged identity in the year 1986 - 1987. The Department has followed curriculum vitae of Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai since the Department of Mathematics has been established. We have been following Manonmaniam Sundaranar University curriculum vitae from the year 1990 - 1991 to till date.
To impart under graduate education in mathematics leading to B.Sc. Degree and other B.Sc. Science stream as allied mathematics and to create an environment in the department so that the students can learn the subjects in homely atmosphere. To make the students aware of the importance of the subject and imbibe a certain degree of maturity so that the student get well trained and develop the confident in themselves to pursue the higher degree and attain job opportunities.
The Department works for excellence in mathematical education so that the students are highly benefited. The brilliant students of the Department get placed in higher posts.
